It’s no secret that many of Oklahoma students struggle with their reading skills. Creek County Literacy Program has come up with a novel approach to assist: We are turning Grandparents into reading tutors. The Caring Grands Program provides one-on-one reading instruction to struggling readers, which may be the deciding factor between educational success and failure for these students.

Caring Grands are senior citizens who have completed a six-hour tutor training course and have successfully passed a background check. Caring Grands tutor struggling first and second grade readers in Creek County elementary schools.

Currently, our Caring Grands tutors provide:

• 30-minute tutoring sessions weekly to students at twelve elementary schools

• Initial, mid-year, and end-of-the-year assessments, which provide tutors the ability to monitor the student’s progress

• An opportunity for students to build a personal home library. Students bring home the book they read with their tutor each week. For many of these children, this is the first book they have owned

In addition to Tutoring, there are many ways you can volunteer your time to help Creek County Literacy Program accomplish its mission. For more information about volunteering, call us at 918-224-9647.
