Creek County Literacy Program Offers Free Tutor Training Workshop to Adult Volunteers
Help Teach An Adult to Read. Become a Volunteer Literacy Tutor.
SAPULPA – The statistics are staggering.
• 17% (9,080) of adults in Creek County 18 years or older do not have a high school diploma.
• 4% (2,136) of adults in Creek County 18 years or older do not have a 9th grade education.
• 12% of Oklahoma adults – more than 400,000 – are functionally illiterate.
Creek County Literacy Program is seeking volunteers to tutor adults in basic literacy.
Creek County Literacy Program is a non-profit organization that trains adults to become volunteer literacy tutors and then matches those tutors with adult learners. To become a tutor, one must attend CCLP’s free 8-hour Tutor Training workshop. Knowledge of another language is not necessary and no prior teaching experience is required. This free workshop will be held over two Saturdays at the Library Annex, 15 North Poplar Street in Sapulpa. Dates are Saturday, October 4 from 9am to 2pm and Saturday, October 11 from 9am to Noon. Both sessions are mandatory. Lunch and snacks are provided.
The presenter, Donna Hall, received her Master’s in Reading from Northeastern State University and is a Certified Reading Specialist. She is also a National Board certified teacher in Early Childhood Education. Donna has taught in the elementary school setting for 18 years, currently teaching second grade at Edison Elementary School in Bristow. For two years she served as a REAC3H Instructional Coach, providing training and assistance to 14 school districts. Donna has also completed the requirements to present innovative strategies for Oklahoma literacy instruction as an Open Minds trainer, sponsored by the Literacy Resource Office of Oklahoma Department of Libraries.

Creek County Literacy Program was founded in 1989 to offer reading instruction, testing and tutoring to learners at no cost. Programs include Adult Basic Education & GED Pre-Prep Classes, Computer Literacy, Health Literacy and Youth Literacy, as well as workshops and activities to support the learners and families. In 2013, CCLP served over 300 adults and youth and distributed over 2,600 free books.
